How does the Sonnen storage system work?
Sonnen stores the excess electricity generated by your PV system when you need it, for example during the daytime, when you are at work or on travel. Therefore, you can use the stored energy in the evening, at night, early in the morning.
The operating principle of a Sonnen storage system is shown in the figure below.
The direct current generated by the PV system (1) is converted into alternating current by the inverter (2). The meters (3) and (4) detect the instantaneous electric powers (in watts) (3) detects energy generation (4) detects the household energy consumption (7).
If production exceeds consumption, the excess electric power is stored in the storage system. The battery (5) is charged by the storage system inverter (6).
If consumption exceeds production, electricity is provided by the storage system. Battery (5) runs out.

How does the Sonnen storage system work?
Sonnen stores the excess electricity generated by your PV system when you need it, for example during the daytime, when you are at work or on travel. Therefore, you can use the stored energy in the evening, at night, early in the morning.

DAY
High energy production, low and intermittent consumption. The system accumulates energy when it is produced in excess but is also ready to provide it immediately as soon as consumption rises beyond production, avoiding purchases and/or disconnections from the grid.
EVENING
Low energy production and high consumption. The system will cover the energy needs with the energy accumulated during the day, also ensuring a higher available power for withdrawal.
As you can see from the graph, the excess production that would otherwise be fed into the grid is instead stored by the batteries. Its usage, therefore, is shifted to those times when there wouldn’t have been production.
